If you kill every Fable NPC, Playground Games says the world will 'stay empty for some time' before being repopulated by 'full NPCs'
Playground Games revealed that in the upcoming Fable title, settlements from which players kill every NPC will remain empty for a period before being repopulated. The studio decided against a permanent death system because it would disrupt other gameplay systems. New NPCs will fully replace the originals, featuring names, jobs, traits, clothing, and voice lines.
- ▪If a player eliminates all NPCs in a settlement, the area will stay empty for some time before the repopulation system activates.
- ▪Playground Games originally considered letting the consequences of killing NPCs persist indefinitely, but rejected it to avoid breaking other game systems.
- ▪The repopulated NPCs will be "full NPCs" with complete attributes such as name, occupation, traits, appearance, clothing, and voice acting.
- ▪Associate game director Will Kennedy discussed the system during a press Q&A at an Xbox event linked to Summer Game Fest, emphasizing the balance between player agency and functional game design.
