NEW DELHI: Twenty-seven years after Indian soldiers recaptured the icy heights of Kargil, the conflict continues to shape India's military doctrine, defence modernisation and national security strategy. It was fought at altitudes exceeding 5,000 metres across the rugged mountains of Kargil, Dras, Batalik, Mushkoh and Kaksar in Ladakh. Their objective was to sever India's supply line to Ladakh, isolate Indian troops deployed in Siachen and force New Delhi into negotiations over Kashmir.The intrusion first came to light on May 3, 1999, when local residents reported suspicious movement in the Kargil sector.
