Linux 7.3 Adding Support For MCTP-Over-USB v1.1
The Linux kernel’s upcoming 7.3 release will include support for MCTP‑over‑USB version 1.1. The new driver code resides in the net‑next branch and introduces a library called mctp‑usblib to handle packet spanning and other spec changes. The feature is expected to be merged during the Linux 7.3 merge window later this month.
- ▪Support for MCTP‑over‑USB v1.1 has been added to the net‑next branch of the Linux kernel.
- ▪The DMTF v1.1 specification adds packet spanning, full‑speed USB support, larger packet length fields, and improved error resiliency.
- ▪A new library, mctp‑usblib, implements the transport packing and unpacking needed for the updated protocol.
- ▪The host driver will use this library, and a future gadget driver can share the implementation.
- ▪The changes are slated to land in Linux 7.3 when the merge window opens later in August.

Linux 7.3 Adding Support For MCTP-Over-USB v1.1 Written by Michael Larabel in Linux Networking on 3 August 2026 at 05:47 AM EDT. Add A Comment Within the Linux networking subsystem's "net-next" Git branch there is now queued up support for MCTP-over-USB v1.1. This is the newest version of the standard for sending Management Component Transport Protocol (MCTP) packets over USB for tasks loike crash dumps, logging, and firmware updates. Since last year in Linux 6.15 was the original MCTP-Over-USB driver support while the MCTP-Over-USB v1.1 specification was released earlier this year. Back in May, DMTF announced the v1.1 spec with support for USB 1.1 or later, full-speed mode transfers, MCTP packet spanning capability, and enhanced error resiliency.
