En 1778, James Cook, el navegante más famoso de su época, desembarcó en el archipiélago hawaiano. Sus habitantes eran poseedores de un idioma cantarín, casi musical, sin expresión escrita y absolutamente ininteligible para el marino y su tripulación. A fin de procurar entenderse con los indígenas, Cook y sus hombres transcribieron los fonemas del olelo y construyeron una lengua con doce consonantes y especiales signos de puntuación. El empeño fracasó y los aborígenes comenzaron a usar una jerga local, trufada de vocablos aparentemente ingleses, una especie de creole hawaiano con el sonido dulzón y danzarín al que estaban acostumbrados.
