NHL overtime rules explained: Longest games, 2026 OT results
The NHL has reverted to traditional 5-on-5 overtime for the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs, eliminating the previous 3-on-3 format and shootouts. This change allows for potentially longer games, as sudden death overtime will continue until a goal is scored.
