En el inicio fueron materiales orgánicos, coral, ámbar, etc. Después llegaron las piedras preciosas, mayoritariamente minerales inorgánicos naturales deseables por su belleza, rareza, durabilidad y tradición. El número de minerales definidos como gemas es pequeño y su valor económico se calcula en función del color, claridad, talla, kilates (peso) y rareza. Actualmente las gemas pueden sintetizarse utilizando unas condiciones similares a las de la naturaleza.
