De una forma intuitiva se puede decir que la reología es la parte de la física que, en los materiales que son capaces de fluir, estudia la relación entre el esfuerzo y la deformación. Las propiedades asociadas a esta respuesta se denominan propiedades reológicas. La palabra fluir significa aquí una deformación continua en el tiempo. Algo que muestran, además de algunos líquidos y gases complejos, también los sólidos.
