This was brought into sharp relief to me last week when, sidelined for nearly a full day by one of my blessedly infrequent migraines, I could not stir myself to care about anything—certainly not changing the world, or walking to the mailbox, or reading the book I had to finish for a review deadline later that week. All three seemed hopelessly Herculean when compared to the pain.
