Opening excerpt (first ~120 words) tap to expand

To Live and Die on Camera in Karen Bass's LA Beege Welborn 5:15 PM | May 31, 2026 AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes There's an old saying that sometimes life imitates fiction, and it couldn't be truer than in the current Los Angeles mayoral race. You have a dystopian cityscape - filthy, covered with the refuse of society, both human and their waste - that looks as if it were created for a movie set. It's dark, squalid. Hopelessness permeates the air, even if there's nary a warm body in sight. If there is one, that body is surrounded by the all-enveloping putridity, from the rags that cover it to the sidewalk where it defecates, and then lies to sleep, or drapes in half - the fentanyl fold. Vermin scamper nearby or pause to nibble. Bit players in a tragedy.

Excerpt limited to ~120 words for fair-use compliance. The full article is at HotAir.
