UK regulator mandates that Google should let publishers opt out of AI search
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has mandated that Google allow publishers to opt out of AI search features without losing visibility in regular search results. This decision comes as part of new regulations following Google's designation as having 'Strategic Market Status' in the UK. Google is required to implement these changes within nine months and submit compliance reports to the CMA.
- ▪Google must allow publishers to opt out of AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- ▪Publishers opting out will not risk losing visibility in regular search results.
- ▪Google is required to attribute publishers with links back to the original source.
