The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is developing an offline UPI feature that uses NFC to enable payments without mobile or internet connectivity. Users will need to preload funds into a UPI Lite wallet and can transact up to 2,000 rupees at merchant POS terminals that support NFC. NPCI may begin certifying POS device manufacturers this year, with a phased rollout planned.

- ▪Users must first add money to a UPI Lite wallet via the internet before making offline payments.
- ▪Each offline transaction can be up to 2,000 rupees and does not require a UPI PIN.
- ▪The corporation may start certifying POS device makers this year, followed by a gradual launch of the service.
